Don’t bother looking up something like that. Automatic boxes were not designed by any human agency.
Just as an example, ZF had a six speed which used four sets of gears. They then designed an eight speed, still with the same four gears. Merc have a nine speed. Still four gears. Ford are designing a ten speed. Yes, four gear trains.

I clicked play on the video and realized that I’m okay with the “magic” explanation. It’s just different magicks for different gearboxes, i.e. the 4-speed auto (4th gear is an overdrive gear) in my car is like first-year Hogwarts magic, and modern ZF boxes are like magicks done by Aurors who aced their OWLs. A range of magic, but magic nonetheless.

i KINDA get it, but i would need to watch the video several times over to understand how the power flow through which gears.

I get manuals no problem .dual clutchs, somewhat. autos are the only one i had NO idea how they work. Still need to watch it again 2 or three tims to get the power flow

Thanks for the share. Never bothered to look this up as I’m not as curious on autos, but now looking at it, I find it highly interesting.
I work with gearing quite a bit in my job, maybe I should look into transmission engineering. It’s very intriguing.
I’ve never thought about the reverse, though that makes total sense.

Like it’s bitch. Not too cold but metric shittonnes of snow. It rained yesterday and now it’s snowing again. I need some two wheels good time or the family might die... (jk).

And how the hell does an old hydraulically controlled auto know when to change gears?

Here is an awesome explainer of how the torque converter works:
A bit dry at first but it’ll make you completely understand everything if you stick with it.

i get how the TC works. it was the trans itself i was curious on.

So complicated that the US army needed two fifteen-minute videos to explain it. That bit about having two inputs is fascinating, it’s like turning a planetary gear into a CVT.

With a very, very tiny engine. 0.3 liter?

Holy fuck that’s awesome. This explains so much of what I was seeing when a coworker was servicing an automatic trans earlier today.

I can understand a three speed. Two gear trains, one provides a low gear. The second gearset speeds up the low gear to give second gear. Lock them together and you get a direct top gear. Take drive from another part of one of them and you get reverse.
It’s only when you go above three gears that elves and witchcraft become involved.
You can buy a Roloff hub gear for your pushbike that’s like one of those old Sturmey Archer gears on steroids and provides 14 speeds from three gear trains.
